This webinar explores the transformative journey of JBJS’s editorial governance, focusing on how shifts in decision-making authority and organizational structure have impacted culture, accountability, and staff engagement. Through a series of insightful questions, the session will delve into:

1. Decentralization of Editorial Decision-Making

o Exploring the impact—both positive and challenging—of decentralizing editorial authority at the top. This includes examining how such decentralization affects organizational structure, culture, and team dynamics.

Previous State of the JBJS Editorial Board

2. Governance Model Shifts

o Investigating the transition from a Deputy Editor model to a Senior/Associate Editor structure under an Executive Editorial Council. The focus is on how this change altered decision-making cadence, accountability, and whether it removed or introduced bottlenecks.

Current State of the JBJS Editorial Board

3. Cultural and Organizational Ripple Effects

o Looking at how top-down decisions created ripple effects across teams, including changes in alignment, engagement, communication, and conflict resolution. This theme also covers strategies for managing resistance and fostering breakthroughs during change.

4. Transparency and Staff Engagement

o Assessing the steps taken to maintain transparency and staff engagement during periods of editorial decentralization. This includes lessons learned about balancing speed with inclusivity, and the emergence of new communication practices or traditions.

5. Lessons and Recommendations for Other Companies

o Drawing out broader lessons and advice for other organizations considering similar changes. This theme addresses how to balance strong leadership with distributed empowerment, sustain morale, and avoid cultural pitfalls during major transitions.

Attendees will gain a nuanced understanding of how editorial governance changes can shape organizational culture, foster engagement, and offer transferable lessons for publishers navigating their own transformations.
